Tiago’s Transformation in the Wreckage
A Wrecked Life
Tiago believed he was in total control of his life and career until a mangled car and the scent of gasoline proved he couldn't even control his next breath.
Up until the moment of his accident, Tiago lived with the conviction that everything happened under his own power. Success in his career had fostered a spirit of pride and arrogance, making him feel as though nothing could ever go wrong. All of those feelings were crushed in the same instant his car was destroyed.
"The truth is, yes, I was at a stage feeling so capable of everything," Tiago recalled. "But then I suffered the accident and I lost the life I thought I had."
The Search for the One in Control
Lying in the wreckage, jolted by the scent of gasoline and the sight of blood, Tiago was overcome with fear. For the first time, he recognized he had no control over his next breath and became determined to find the One who did. While recovering in his hospital bed, he began to take the idea of God seriously, moving past his lifelong view that the Creator was merely a "legend."
This shift in thinking led Tiago to an Internet search on his phone, where he encountered a Global Media Outreach Gospel presentation. He submitted a question and was connected with Fernando, an Online Missionary.
A New Recipe for Life
Through the discipleship of Fernando, Tiago learned about the claims of Jesus Christ and the gift of grace. He surrendered his life to the Lord, repenting of a marijuana addiction, anger, and the pride that had once defined him.
"I now understand that [God] is what I was lacking for my recipe to life," Tiago shared. "Now, I always look to the Gospel for learning."
By the end of a 30-day discipleship course, Tiago was walking in a completely new way. His addiction was healed, and his self-centered attitude shifted toward selflessness.

The ability to safely confide in a trusted mentor made the difference for Tiago. In his season of recovery, he found a friend in Fernando who could handle his outbursts and guide him toward the truth of the Gospel.
"Thank you for paying attention to my outburst, because without you, there would be no one to tell all this," Tiago told Fernando.
